Science trips galore!
Date Posted: Thursday the 9th of June

During the spring term students from Burnholme continued to enrich their Science learning by taking part in trips to York University.

Fifteen year 9 students took part in the annual Science Trail, joining hundreds of students from schools across Yorkshire.  They visited many of the Science departments and carried out a range of hands-on activities.  University undergraduates were their hosts for the day and showed the students around the campus, sharing their personal experiences of life at university.  At the end of the afternoon, everyone was gathered together in the huge lecture theatre at the National Science Learning Centre to watch the jelly baby die!  You will need to ask one of the participants or a science teacher to find out more about this!

A group of year 10 students took part in a popular annual event at the University called “Chemistry at Work”.  The students spent the day in the teaching laboratories in the Chemistry department and carried lots of different experiments, including investigating the heat given out when Plaster of Paris sets, and how manufacturers use chemicals called emulsifiers to keep the perfumes mixed in our shampoos and hair gels.

At Burnholme we look for every opportunity for our students to see how Science is used outside the classroom and these trips are a small part of that programme.  Check the next edition of “The Business” for news of further exciting events and visits that will take place during the Summer term
