BAF Diploma

The BAF has been developed to provide a solid grounding in business skills for young people who are interested in any kind of business career or hope to run their own business.

The diploma in Business, Administration & Finance (BAF) is built around three main themes –

  • Business Enterprise – looks how to develop ideas, how to carryout research and promote products or services

  • Business Administration – introduces administration and its importance to organisations

  • Finance – looks at the knowledge and skills needed to manage personal and business finance

The course is designed to be interesting, relevant to everyday life and will open up a wide range of educational, training and career opportunities.  Diploma students also develop a good standard of English, Mathematics and ICT.  This broad mix of knowledge, understanding and skills will equip young people for further study or employment.

What is Studied?

Principal Learning - At the centre of this diploma are the three core sectors – business, administration & finance.  The units studied contain the main things you need to know about these sectors.  Students learn how businesses work, what issues affect businesses today and develop the skills they need to succeed in the business world.  Students will get the opportunity to set up and run their own business, market and sell a product that they have created.  They will learn how to manage their finances and those of a business, work effectively in teams, offer good customer service, succeed at work, cope with change and discover how outside influences can affect a business.

Generic Learning – In addition to the specialist sector knowledge the BAF diploma will ensure you develop functional skills in English, Mathematics and ICT – these are all relevant and valued by employers and higher education.

Personal, Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) – All students will develop skills that are essential for life, higher education and work in today’s competitive job market.  Skills such as independent research, problem solving, team working & effective participation, reflection & creative thinking will be developed.

Student Project – Students also need to complete a project.  In completing this, students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired on the course and their planning, research, analysis and presentation skills.

Another Successful Year!

A huge well done to everyone involved in the Business Studies Department.  Following great success in 2008 where 80% of students achieved A* - C, 2009 results were even better!  90% of students achieved A* - C which clearly shows that hard work pays off.  All the students deserve praise for their commitment and endeavor, however, particular mention must go to Marcus Cowell who achieved a stunning A* for his overall grade.

During the summer holidays the school and the department received further excellent news as it was confirmed by the DCSF that Burnholme had been successful with their redesignation bid – this means the school continues to be the only B&E specialist school in the City of York.
