P.E.
The Physical Education department at Burnholme Community College deploys a vibrant, charismatic teaching and learning ethos.
Although a relatively small department, we work conscientiously to enable that all areas of the National Curriculum are strategically followed and delivered to a high standard. We believe that ‘every child matters’ and aspire to lead enjoyable and differentiated lessons in order to enhance each student’s provision of physical education and activity.
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8, and 9) we cover a variety of sports and activities in line with the key strands of the national curriculum: invasion games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, net/wall games, and striking and fielding. By way of preparation for GCSE P.E at Key Stage 4, we also now offer a GCSE Taster which has had recent success in promoting the subject to those students with a key interest in developing both their performing skills and knowledge at GCSE level. We also offer a number of extra curricular clubs including boys/girls football, netball, rounders, rugby league, cricket, badminton, basketball, fitness, athletics and dance.
At Key Stage 4 (Years 10, 11) we again offer the above sports as a leisure option, with an applied emphasis placed upon student independent learning. It is in Key Stage 4 where the students at Burnholme have a more significant role to play within their P.E curriculum, through the general organisation, coaching, officiating, and structuring of lessons. Extra curricular clubs are again offered to in football, rugby league, basketball, netball, rounders, cricket, badminton, and dance.
Here at Burnholme we offer an ever improving and thriving GCSE P.E course for students in Key Stage 4. The 2 year course consists of 2 further hours of P.E lessons every week, one of which is practical and the other theoretical, focusing on the physiological and sociological elements of the sporting world and more importantly the human body.
Sports Report
It’s all been relatively quiet in the P.E. department recently due to the dark and cold nights but there is still loads going on at lunch time. Starting the second week back we have World Muy Thai kick boxer Champion starting a lunch time club on a Friday for girls. Rich will hopefully continue this club after half term for the boys, so don’t feel left out – your chance will come. We also have a community coach, Sharon Jux, running a Dance club on a Thursday lunch time in the drama studio – this is open to all pupils – girls and boys. So get your dancing shoes on!
