The English Department
The English department consists of dedicated staff whose love of language and literature is communicated to students through challenging, interesting and fun lessons.
Key Stage 3
In Years 7-9 students continue to build on their literacy skills and early development. The units of work cover many aspects of English as well as improving writing skills and students’ spelling, punctuation and grammar. Students are given the opportunity to develop skills for analysing and interpreting text and are encouraged to become confident, independent readers and writers.
Key Stage 4
In Year 10-11, most students take both the English and English Literature GCSE course which awards two GCSEs by the end of Year 11.
Coursework – 5 written pieces covering different aspects of English; Pre 1914 prose, Shakespeare, 20th century Drama, Media and Original Writing, plus 3 Speaking and Listening assessments to examine students’ ability to deliver speeches and take part in oral activities.
Examinations – students sit 2 English and 1 English Literature examinations. These assess skills covered over the 2 years and include questions based on the Anthology poetry which is studied in the lessons.
Media Studies
The English department also offer the chance to study GCSE Media Studies. This is an exciting and unique course which develops students’ understanding and application of Media, including TV, radio and film, news media, advertising, computer gaming etc.
Media Coursework – students complete 3 projects that combine practical production (storyboards, research, design) and write supporting essays. Topics include film, TV, music, news and magazines. Examination – Students are given examination materials which they have to provide in-depth analysis during a 3hour examination.
