Resistant Materials

Resistant Materials

We have 2 large and well resourced work areas at the college for studying Design and Technology through Key Stage 3 and at GCSE Resistant Materials level.

Students learn about and develop a range of skills to create imaginative products from woods, metals, plastics, and smart materials on their own and in groups. They are taught the safe use of hand tools and machine tools, covering a spectrum of manufacturing techniques and industrial processes. These of course include, computer aided design and machining (CAD / CAM) right from Year 7, through to Year 11.

Through Key Stage 3, students also develop their awareness and understanding of Structures and of Systems and Control including mechanisms and electronics, which together with studies on the above Materials, give a sound basis for their KS4 studies.

Design is a core element of the subject and students develop solutions to a wide variety of project-based design briefs. They learn to make their own decisions, of design and for production, throughout their time in the department. Design portfolios and theory inputs provide the firm groundings for moving on to manufacture their inspired products.

Students are encouraged always to be inquiring and innovative within the constraints set for each project, whether for themselves or others as the target market. They develop the confidence to acquire for themselves further skills and knowledge.

The department is fully committed to raising attainment, aspirations and awareness, across all ages and abilities for our increasingly technological society.

In 1505, Leonardo da Vinci designed the first helicopter. What will you design?
