Geography

Key Stage 3

Throughout Key Stage 3 students follow the following topics:

 

  • Year 7: What is Geography? Population, Volcanoes, Weather, How has York changed? Map work
  • Year 8 : Tsunami, Coastal Management, Micro-Climates, The Worlds Around Us, Tourism, River Landscapes
  • Year 9 : Geography of Crime, Natural Disasters, Energy Resources, Brazil, Italy, Our World

Key Stage 4

The current GCSE option is AQA (A) Higher or Foundation tier.

Marking

Student's work books will be marked in detail each term after each assessment. They will be given direct feedback about the strengths and weaknesses of their work and most importantly, they will be given advice in the form of a target as to how they can improve their performance in the subject. During the rest of the term, students will receive a traffic light which monitors their performance and assesses them in light of their ability.

Green: making good progress as expected. Amber: room for improvement. Red: serious concerns and weaknesses.

Student's progress will be recorded on a Humanities Record sheet which can be either photocopied or can be accessed on the Humanities Folder in the Staff Area on the computer

Teaching Methods

A variety of teaching methods are used by the Humanities staff at Burnholme College to ensure Geography remains a dynamic and interesting subject throughout both Key Stage 3 and 4. The nature of the method will depend on the individual teacher, the topic being taught and the composition of the group. Methods used include:

Traditional imparting of knowledge; Collaborative group work; Problem solving; Interactive White Board; ICT
