About Modern Languages

The aim of the modern foreign languages department is to provide all students with the opportunity to experience the language and culture of a foreign country; thus allowing pupils to appreciate differences. The curriculum is relevant and up-to-date, helping pupils to achieve and succeed in a subject which on a national scale has recently decreased in popularity.

At Burnholme Community College, year 7 pupils study 2 hours of modern foreign languages per week.  Initially they will study both French and Italian, before choosing one of these to major in (there is provision for exceptional language students to continue to study both). When pupils progress into KS4, they will stay with their specialist language, and will study the relevant GCSE into year 11.  Curriculum time increases to 3 hours a week in KS4.

Keen language students can opt into the language Olympics (now called the Language World Championships).  Burnholme were 10th out of 140 schools at last year’s event, and we achieved the top position for Greek!

This year the department has organized a trip to Paris in collaboration with the humanities department, and it is anticipated that the trip abroad will become an annual feature.
