About Inclusion & SEN

Burnholme Community College is an inclusive school that provides quality education for all pupils.  We recognize that our pupils have diverse needs and talents, and we aim to provide effective support and challenges via appropriate curricula, and through the accommodation of different styles and rates of learning.  Every child is valued and welcome, and we use a range of resources, teaching styles, support arrangements, partnerships, adjustments etc in order to ensure that a child fulfils his/her potential.

We embody a ‘systems’ or ‘social’ model of inclusion, having moved away from the traditional ‘medical-based’ SEN philosophy and we are aware that ‘learning difficulties’ or ‘disabilities’ are not just something a person has, but can also be as the result of the interaction between systems and agents within the school or in society. Whilst we adhere to the SEN Code of Practice, we are also interested in exploring how barriers to learning are created, but also eradicated through our own practice.  The onus is on us as educators to create opportunities for our pupils to flourish.

We offer a wide range of interventions to support our pupils such as: literacy support, mentoring, support with learning in class, adapted aids, behavioural support.  We work closely with outside agencies to ensure our support is as effective as possible.

The Burnholme Inclusion Team are highly trained, experienced and extremely committed. They offer a variety of provision tailored to the needs of learners, to suit small groups and on a one-to-one basis. We also have our own, in-house centre to support behaviour and attendance.

There are excellent A,G&T opportunities and challenges for pupils with a talent or enthusiasm for a subject.  Mentoring is provided for our most able pupils as well as pupils with learning needs/emotional needs. A booklet of recent/current opportunities is available on request.
