About Business Studies

Burnholme Community College is the only school in the city of York with a B&E specialism. We feel the B&E specialism is a strength of the school and this was highlighted in the most recent Ofsted inspection: “the school’s business & enterprise specialism is a key strength and has impacted well on both achievement and personal development. Targets in specialist subjects have been constantly met or succeeded in business……” May 2009.

Over the last 5 years business courses have enjoyed much GCSE success.
2007 – 82%
2008 – 80%
2009 – 90%
2010 – 86%
2011 – 90%

Students are encouraged to follow a business course in Key Stage 4; however, all students in Key Stage 3 are given the opportunity to experience business education as they receive 1 hour per week in years 7, 8 & 9. As an option subject, business is given 2 hours per week depending on the business course chosen. We feel by offering business to all our students we are preparing them correctly for employment in the 21st century. Students study a range of different topics from understanding basic business ownership to complex marketing and financial strategies.

From September 2011 students can get involved with setting up their own business and work on the Young Enterprise scheme. Students will be trained and coached by business mentors to successfully enter the business world. They will see the pitfalls and successes associated with all small and large businesses.

Partner primary and secondary school appreciate and acknowledge Burnholme’s strength and it is quite normal for staff and students from the school to visit these partner schools to deliver specialist sessions related to business & enterprise.

The business department aim to develop the academic, enterprise and social skills needed to succeed in life – ‘Burnholme Community College shapes futures and builds careers’.
